The forest was silent after the snowfall. Many of the ground weeds were frosted over, some had died or gone dormant till spring would wake them. A few hardy ones lived still under the snow and frost. As we walked under the canopy, our steps stiring small clouds of seeds and spores (and now snow too) from the underbrush, the old sage pulled out his long neck pipe and lit it. For once I envied the old wizard's nasty habit.
