“America” comes from the 1957 Broadway musical, West Side Story. The musical was written with a book by Arthur Laurents, music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, and choreography by Jerome Robbins. The show takes place in Manhattan in the 1950s and tells the tale of star crossed lovers Maria and Tony. It also focuses on the separation and tension between the Puerto Rican and white community at the time. The show went on to win 2 Tony Awards for its original Broadway production, and has been revived and toured many times since.
